Types of Packaging

Packaging is generally categorized into three types.

a) Primary Packaging:

When a product is packed with the help of the first layer of packaging material, then it is called the primary packaging. The primary package does not let tampering happen with the product. The product can be stored in the packaging material for a long period of time. The primary packaging lets a consumer hold the products with ease.

b) Secondary Packaging:

In the secondary packaging, several other pre-packaged products are packed together. The products do not come in contact with the secondary packaging which keeps the product safer than before. The secondary packaging makes the product transport from one place to another without hassles. One can handle the product comfortably due to the secondary packaging.

c) Tertiary Packaging:

The purpose of tertiary packaging is to keep the manufactured goods safe. In order to export many goods, the tertiary packaging is used. For tertiary packaging, wooden box, carton, and cardboard box are used for packaging the products.

Tertiary or transit packaging is used for bulk handling, warehouse storage, and transport shipping. The most common form is a palletized unit load that packs tightly into containers.

These broad categories can be somewhat arbitrary. For example, depending on the use, a shrink wrap can be primary packaging when applied directly to the product, secondary packaging when used to combine smaller packages, or tertiary packaging when used to facilitate some types of distribution, such as to affix several cartons on a pallet.
